Hunter College is one of only nine institutions of higher education in the country to offer an interdisciplinary program in quantitative biology. Students majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics or Statistics can add a quantitative biology concentration to their major. The Biology department occupies the 8 th and 9 th floors of the Hunter North building. The mission of the Department of Biological Sciences parallels that of Hunter College: to provide a quality education for our undergraduate and graduate students, enabling them to participate productively in their chosen pursuits. GENTalks were designed to be a series of short recorded presentations on novel, exciting and futuristic topics in genomics, that might capture the imagination of students and scientists.

Unique aspects of the program included national and regional professional development activities, mentorship by physician-scientists, interaction with HHMI investigators, and integration into a community of like-minded peers. Each student selected and worked with a mentor to develop a basic, translational, or applied biomedical research proposal.

It was truly a life-altering year. I am now an independent investigator with a research program focused on integrating chemical genomic, genetic, and proteomic approaches to discover new protein targets and lead compounds for cancer therapy. My passion for science was forged during this year of dedicated research.

As an independent investigator studying neural control of cardiac excitability, I can directly trace my scientific drive to my profoundly positive experiences during my HHMI medical fellowship year. In that year, I was able to dive deep into a research project and ultimately realized that I belonged in a laboratory setting answering questions about the genetic underpinnings of human disease. While students enrolled in various STEM courses benefit from these efforts, the HHMI Program also has encouraged integrating learning and innovation through an interdisciplinary research-based initiative called the Spelman Pioneer Award in Research Competition SPARC , which is an annual competition where interdisciplinary teams of students vie for a top prize awarded to the most viable outcome to a proposed problem over a given academic year.

The biology department launched a broadscale curriculum reform in This skills-based curriculum laid the foundation for developing core competencies through its four semester-long introductory core, using student-centered active learning pedagogies in all classes. Next, the department focused on introducing authentic research experiences in courses. Since , over a dozen courses with authentic research have been developed. This has resulted in a complete transformation in the learning experience of students.

This model has served as an example for other departments to incorporate inquiry-based pedagogies and course-based research experiences. Applicants must be 12th-graders enrolled in a Georgia high school, have a GPA of 3. Stipends are awarded to students accepted to the program, based on participation. Room and board are provided; travel expenses are the responsibility of the participant.
